Here are my friends-
These are some of the cool people I know in columbia who are working on some non-money making artistic enterprise.. I've added some stories to keep things interesting. I have a sneaking feeling that this friendly gesture will do me more harm than good. (why wasn't I on your page?, I don't do naughty things with raisins...)
Scott Bilby: A guitar player
of the now defunct Trema and Starometska. He is now working on the music web site epitonic out in San Francisco.
Biff Bolen: The sole member of the
electronic Go Carnivore. His music can be found at epitonic.
He has a website.
Biff's parties are probably the only parties in columbia that I make sure I go to.
David Bosinger: An incredibly
versatile model. For the "brats" photographs dave was covered in electrical
tape. We figured that if we stuck the tape against something a few times before putting it
on his skin then it wouldn't be too hard to take off. Well, we did that at first but we
got impatient with how long it was taking and we started putting the tape straight on.
Well it didn't come off easily and Dave was stuck in the shower trying to tear it off
himself. He's now okay but I wouldn't be too surprised if I ended up taped to my bed in a
bold midnight revenge move.
Michael Coddington: A guitar player of the band Speed Kitty and a long time
friend. He has my utmost respect for working on a Java based fractal generation program. A
long time ago Michael and I used to get drunk and skateboard luge-style down hills. One
time we went out to a very steep hill and I got on. I picked up speed and the wind began
to rush in my head. Then the skateboard began to wobble. Then it was really rocking. Soon
I had shot off the board and was lying on the ground. The skin from my back was a few feet
behind me. Michael took me back to his place and poured iodine on my back (ahh!).
Clint Cook: The photographer for the USC Biology department. He introduced me to photographing salt-crystals and doing projections. We still take pictures together.
Nyna Dalbec: A ballet dancer married to Tim Bedford who has recently had a
baby. She was an excellent model but we have had weird schedules and I haven't seen her in
a while.
Susan Finley: I went to high
school with her and she was my roommate for a year. She plays guitar, she works out, and
she models. She had a bad feeling when I decided to brew a big vat of beer in our
apartment. She was of course right, me and friend Nate had to boil the beer at some step
during the process. Well we looked away, it overflowed, it filled the apartment with a
beer like stench...
Andre
Hoover: A futurist. He looks with fascination on gene therapy, internet
democracy, sheep cloning, big-bang theory, and, let us not forget, breast
implants.
Michael Jones: My roommate
for a year and a backbone to the Columbia music scene. He does a lot of recording of local
bands on his 8-track and is 1/2 of Genghis records. For my photographs he has held a
bouquet of dead fish. (I said to him: "Alright lets shoot it again but this time with
less flies").
Aubrey Nickels: Aubrey
has the crazy fashion sense. She's a punk rocker with cats and rats. She wants to be in a
band called Zip Pop Go. Her life is drama.
Kristen
Phillips: I was having a bad day. I was laying in my bed- the ceiling wanted to
know what the hell I was staring at. Kristen comes over, rousts me from the bed,
and off we go. An hour later she was running through the fountain of a local
mall. Go Kristen!
Campbell
Roark: My new roommate. A well-read USC philosophy student and great guy. For my photos he
has survived crawling into a fireplace and being covered in charcoal. He does naughty
things with raisins. He writes and we are working on an idea for a short film.
Tim Salter: A guitar player, juggler, jet skier, Frisbee golfer, artist, weight lifter, sprinter, rock climber... There was a brief period when all I thought about was climbing and if your really into it buildings become a lot like rocks. Anyhow there was a building on campus that looked like a real challenge. So we start climbing it. Before we new two USC cops had come over. They made us get on the ground with our hands behind our heads. They searched our wallets. They yelled. It turned out fine.
Jack Stansill: A photographer for Visuals. I did a lot of my early black & white work with him. I haven't had a chance to see him in a while.
Sarah Trice: Sarah is an excellent subject with great ideas. She has recently returned to the States after an extended tour abroad.
Jeff
Wandersman: My brother. An artist and photographer. He is the "good son" in our
family. He was a victim of the tinfoil shoot and helped me cover an entire room- including
plants- in tinfoil.
Katie
Wells: Kaite wanted to take pool pictures in the middle of winter. She told me
about how she'd swum in the mountain springs of Virginia. She swore she'd have no problems
taking nudes in the water. I grab my wetsuit and get ready. I check the temperature of the
pool- 51 degrees. We decide to go for it. She jumps in and looks startled but says its
okay. I jump in- in my wet suit- and all the exposed parts of my body start to go numb. I
can't really hold the camera. My body starts to turn blue. She manages one dive before we
decided to quit.
Columbia Bands
Speed Kitty-Canaveral-Science Knows
No Sin: Speed Kitty rocked Columbia then New York and now Columbia again. The members are
currently Michael Coddington, Susan Margolis, Ken Dubard, and John Bradley. I'm not going
to write music reviews, I don't care for them but these guys would be like Sonic Youth but
tighter.
Erector Set: Erector set is Tommy Kraus and
Brett Lee. Their music is hard and electronic. It bludgeons me.
Go Carnivore: Go carnivore is the eclectic electronic brainchild of Biff Bolen.
Also a shout out to Slur and Felonious Swank who I haven't had a chance to see in a while but are really good.
